Environmental geology award to Utah Geological Survey

This year’s winner of the John C. Frye Memorial Award in Environmental Geology is, “Investigation of Land Subsidence and Earth Fissures in Cedar Valley, Iron County, Utah,” Special Study 150, Utah Geological Survey, 2014, Tyler Knudsen, Paul Inkenbrandt, William Lund, Mike Lowe, and Steve Bowman, authors. 

This award is co-sponsored by the Geological Society of America and AASG for the best nominated publication in the field of environmental geology published by a state geological survey or by GSA during the past three years.  The Utah report was selected by a three-person panel from amongst nine excellent submittals.

The award will be presented during the GSA Annual Meeting, to be held in Baltimore, MD in November 1-4 of this year.  The award will be announced at the GSA Awards Ceremony, and the award itself will be presented at the AASG Mid-Year Meeting which runs in conjunction with the GSA meeting. 

AASG Distinguished Service Award to James Robertson of Wisconsin

In his 22 years as a member of AASG and State Geologist of Wisconsin, Jamie has made innumerable contributions to both his own State Survey as well as to the AASG organization.  Jamie has represented AASG to the AGI, GSA, and the NRC where he served on the Board of Earth Sciences and Resources, and has a long and successful association with the National Cooperative Geological Mapping Program.  Jamie has served as AASG Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President, and President.

Jamie will be formally presented with this well-deserved award at the 2015 AASG Annual Business Meeting in Flagstaff, Arizona, June 17.  Please join me in thanking and congratulating our colleague on this achievement.

Petroleum Geologist position at Idaho Geological Survey

Position Summary

The Idaho Geological Survey has three offices throughout the state with the main office located on the campus of the University of Idaho in Moscow. The survey is seeking to hire a full-time Senior Petroleum Geologist who will work from the Moscow office. Annual salary for the position ranges from $44, 491.20 to $56, 347.20 (depending on experience) and successful candidates are eligible for full benefits. Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in Geology and three additional years of post-graduate applied geologic work experience. Necessary requirements for the position include experience supervising geologists or other technical staff, proficiency with field and subsurface investigations, surface and subsurface geologic mapping skills, and experience compiling and analyzing data. The primary research emphasis is subsurface petroleum geological assessment within Idaho which requires extended travel, field work, interaction and development of relationships with industry, state and federal agencies, academic institutions, professional colleagues, and the general public. Geological field mapping or sequence stratigraphic project duties will be assigned as needed during a portion of the summer months to assist with agency mapping obligations and deliverables to the U.S. Geological Survey. Applicants should also have experience with maintaining a fiscal budget for research or industry projects and a publication track record. Field work may include hiking over rough terrain while carrying equipment. Extended travel and overnight stays will be required for field assignments and public speaking engagements. The Senior Petroleum Geologist 8 reports directly to the Director of the Idaho Geological Survey. Pick & Gavel Award to Dr. Pat Leahy

The Association of American State Geologists (AASG) announced that Dr. Pat Leahy, Executive Director of the American Geosciences Institute, will be the recipient of the 2015 Pick and Gavel Award.   AASG is recognizing that awareness of geosciences in this nation has been heightened significantly through effective education and communication under Pat's enthusiastic and creative leadership.  

The Pick and Gavel Award was initiated by AASG in 1999 to recognize distinguished friends of geology who have made or are making major contributions to advancing the role that geoscience plays in our society.
 
The Pick and Gavel Dinner is held in Washington D.C. in mid-March at the Cosmos Club, whose history is steeped in geology. One of its founders and first presidents was John Wesley Powell, 1881 -1894 USGS Director and explorer of the Grand Canyon, and its membership has included many renowned geologists.

The Award consists of a mounted mineral, fossil, or rock, with a symbol that includes a geologist's pick, a policy-maker's gavel, and the Capitol, where geologists and policy-makers work together to respond to the needs of the nation. 

The award will be presented at the  2015 Pick and Gavel Award banquet at the Cosmos Club, 2121 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington DC, the evening of Tuesday, March 10th.  A reception will commence at 6 PM, with dinner following at 7 PM.
