A few days later, Jeff Halka, State Geologist of Maryland, announced his retirement also effective June 30.   Taking over as Acting Director of the Maryland Geological Survey will be Richard Ortt.  Rich has been employed at the Survey for over 20 years and will be able to provide a smooth transition while the Department of Natural Resources works through the process with the Governor's office to permanently fill the position.
