State of Alaska
Division of Geological and Geophysical
Surveys
Mineral Resources Section Chief
Job Description:
The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is
seeking an experienced and highly motivated geologist to provide long-term
planning, scientific leadership, and oversight for the Division’s Mineral
Resources Section. DGGS is a dynamic, fast-paced office with multiple
field-based programs evaluating many facets of Alaska geology. Alaska offers
geologist’s frontier opportunities to make creative professional contributions
and significant new geologic discoveries. The DGGS Mineral Resources Section
conducts geologic mapping and research to further the understanding of the
state’s geology and determine the state’s metallic and non-metallic mineral-resource
potential. More information about DGGS’s programs is available on the website www.dggs.alaska.gov.
The successful applicant will provide professional-scientific and
operational management of multiple, applied research and bedrock mapping
projects in support of mineral resource assessments throughout the state. This
is a full-time, permanent supervisory position, with a current staff of seven
full-time geologists.
The successful candidate needs a strong background in
project management, field-based geologic mapping, and economic geology,
preferably with experience in Alaska. Examples of duties include:
·
Establish the Mineral Resources
Section’s program goals, plans, and objectives in consultation with the
Director.
·
Identify areas of the state, styles of
mineral occurrences, or commodity types where geologic mapping and (or)
scientific research will benefit the State and (or) will encourage mineral
exploration. Develop funding proposals to address identified needs.
·
Conceive, plan, direct, and participate
in statewide, multidisciplinary, field-, lab-, and office-based
mineral-resource projects. Coordinate these with other DGGS staff, management,
other state and federal agencies, Alaska Native organizations, and industry.
·
Manage section activities to ensure
public availability of data through timely production of maps and reports, and
completion of projects within time and budget constraints.
·
Provide professional-level scientific,
technologic, and operational leadership. Supervise section staff, mentor junior
staff and monitor professional service contracts where appropriate.
·
Compile, analyze, synthesize, and interpret
available geologic data to define mineral belts and provide mineral-resource
endowment estimates and land-ownership recommendations for the State of Alaska.
·
Manage the acquisition and
archiving of new and historical, field and laboratory geologic data needed to
understand the genesis and geologic models for Alaska’s mineral deposits.
·
Author and supervise the production of
expert-level, peer-reviewed reports and geologic maps.
·
Prepare and deliver written and oral
presentations in divisional, departmental, public, and professional forums.
·
Respond to requests by the Director,
DGGS staff, state or federal agencies, and the public for information or
assistance on issues requiring expert knowledge of the geology and mineral
resources of Alaska.
