Position Summary

The Idaho Geological Survey has three offices throughout the state with the main office located on the campus of the University of Idaho in Moscow. The survey is seeking to hire a full-time Senior Petroleum Geologist who will work from the Moscow office. Annual salary for the position ranges from $44, 491.20 to $56, 347.20 (depending on experience) and successful candidates are eligible for full benefits. Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in Geology and three additional years of post-graduate applied geologic work experience. Necessary requirements for the position include experience supervising geologists or other technical staff, proficiency with field and subsurface investigations, surface and subsurface geologic mapping skills, and experience compiling and analyzing data. The primary research emphasis is subsurface petroleum geological assessment within Idaho which requires extended travel, field work, interaction and development of relationships with industry, state and federal agencies, academic institutions, professional colleagues, and the general public. Geological field mapping or sequence stratigraphic project duties will be assigned as needed during a portion of the summer months to assist with agency mapping obligations and deliverables to the U.S. Geological Survey. Applicants should also have experience with maintaining a fiscal budget for research or industry projects and a publication track record. Field work may include hiking over rough terrain while carrying equipment. Extended travel and overnight stays will be required for field assignments and public speaking engagements. The Senior Petroleum Geologist 8 reports directly to the Director of the Idaho Geological Survey.
